Key Objectives
At the end of the workshop, delegates will be able to:
- recognise situations where learning needs to take place
- analyse tasks in order to plan effective training
- design and carry out short pieces of on-job training to meet specified needs
- write appropriate session materials to ensure their training is structured and the training content can be reviewed at a later date
Outline
Introduce the trainer to training
- what is meant by learning and the benefits of developing people
- how learning needs may be identified
- how people's performance at work may be improved
The learning process
- how people learn and the part the trainer can play in bringing about learning
- identifying and overcoming obstacles to learning
- comparing the relative effectiveness of explanation, questioning, demonstration and practice
Thinking through tasks in order to identify:
- a logical sequence of steps
- areas which might prove difficult for the learner
- key points of information e.g. safety, legal, company policy etc.
- signs which indicate achievement or non-achievement of performance
Communication
- communicating standards of performance, procedures, skills and other information in a way which will be readily accepted and recalled
- using knowledge of the learners as individuals to motivate them to achieve and extend their potential
- gaining attention and maintaining interest in the subject of the session
- using questions to develop reasoning and learning, and to check level of understanding and recall
- monitoring achievement and recording standards met in the workplace
Programme Outline
Day 1
- Introductions and programme overview
- Identifying learning needs and the benefits of training
- How people learn
- Planning training to include the attention part of the task, the analysis of the steps involved and how to involve the trainee with mini practices.
- Checking training
- Short preparation time for practice training session
- Practice training session and feedback
Evening Work (at least 2 hours)
Design a new training task from scratch based on the learning of day one, and the feedback from the first session.
Day 2
- Involving trainees through asking questions
- 3O minutes preparation time to integrate questions into already prepared materials
- Delivery and feedback on assessed training session
- Overall review and discussion on final assessment
NB: Day Two can run at a future date rather than a consecutive day if required
Final Assessment (2 – 4 weeks later)
Deliver a 20 minute training session to one or two colleagues who have little knowledge of the process already. Evidence of preparation must also be available.
